Bats form a separate and distinguishable group of mammals related to moles and shrews. Bats are the only flying mammals. Bats are beneficial in that they eat insects and keep insect populations down. During the day bats find shelter in a variety of secluded, dark, poorly ventilated places that heat up during the day. Due to increasing urbanization, the number of these natural roosting sites has been reduced and window shutters, drain pipes, billboards, roof tiles, and attics have become popular roosting sites.
The only permanent way to get rid of bats and to keep them out of your home is to exclude them from the structure by plugging their entrance holes. Once all entrances have been located, all entrances are sealed except for one. A one way door, funnel, or flap is installed so that the bats can get out, but not return to their roost. After three or four nights the remaining hole is sealed.
