The black widow web itself is an irregular tangled mass and contains a silken retreat where she can hide. The female hangs upside down in her web where she defends her egg sac. Most bites to humans occur as a part of defense against attacks on a web.  Black widow spider silk is five times stronger than steel and has extroardinary elasticity, and toughness.  Currently scientists are optimizing methods to produce synthetic spider silk which can be used in a wide range of medical, military, and commercial applications.  Some include the production of bullet proof vents, medical sutures, artificial ligaments, fishing lines, ropes, and seat belts.

Black Widow -Highly Venomous.

Black widow venom is 15 times more potent than that of the timber rattlesnake.  The have a distinctive, hourglass-shaped mark on the underside of their abdomens.  Adult female black widows are about 1.5” in length including the legs.

Brown Recluse – Highly Venomous, necrotic venom

Brown recluse have bodies about 3/8” in length and have a violin shaped marking on their backs.  Brown recluse venom can cause extreme tissue damage.
